Red Light Therapy: What It Is and How It Helps
At SB Physio, we get a lot of questions about red light therapy—what it is, how it works, and whether it’s effective. With so much buzz around it in wellness, fitness, and recovery spaces, it’s worth breaking down the science and helping you decide if it’s right for you.
What Is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy (RLT), also called low-level light therapy or photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular function. Unlike ultraviolet (UV) light, which can damage skin, red light is safe and penetrates tissues without causing burns or harmful effects.
How It Works
When red or near-infrared light is absorbed by cells, it stimulates the mitochondria (the “powerhouse” of cells). This leads to:
Increased energy production (ATP) for faster healing
Improved circulation for better nutrient and oxygen delivery
Reduced inflammation and swelling
Enhanced tissue repair and regeneration
Benefits of Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy is being used in both medical and wellness settings for a wide range of benefits, including:
Muscle recovery after workouts
Relief of joint pain and stiffness
Support for wound healing
Reduction in inflammation and swelling
Improved skin health (collagen production, scar healing)
Potential benefits for mood, sleep, and energy levels
Is It the Same as Laser Therapy?
No—red light therapy is different from high-powered Class IV laser therapy like our LightForce® 25W laser. While both use light to stimulate healing, red light therapy is typically lower intensity, broader coverage, and used for general recovery and wellness, while Class IV laser therapy is more targeted for specific injuries.
What to Expect
Red light therapy sessions are non-invasive, painless, and usually last 10–20 minutes. There’s no downtime—you can go straight back to your normal activities. Results build over time, especially when used consistently as part of a recovery or wellness routine.
