Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a dynamic profession with a scientific base and clinical applications in the restoration, maintenance and promotion of optimal physical function. Physical therapists diagnose and manage movement dysfunction and enhance physical functional abilities. They restore, maintain and promote optimal physical function, wellness and quality of life as it relates to movement and health. • Why do I need physical therapy?

Physical therapy can help you move better and relieve pain. It is used to improve or restore your physical function and your fitness level. The goal of physical therapy is to make daily tasks and activities easier. It can also help with recovery after surgery. Your doctor or surgeon may suggest physical therapy for injuries or long-term health problems.

  • Are physical therapists licensed?

Yes, all of our therapists have obtained a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and are licensed by the state of California.

  • How long should I wait to start physical therapy?

In most cases, you should start physical therapy immediately. The sooner you have your first appointment; the sooner you will be out of pain! Our clinic aims to offer all new patient appointments with less than a 2-week wait.

  • Can I see a physical therapist without a physician's referral?

Yes. As of January 1, 2014, a new California law (AB 1000) was enacted which allows consumers direct access to physical therapy. The limitations with this legislation require referral to a medical doctor if care exceeds 45 days or 12 visits; whichever comes first. Please note: some insurance companies still require a physician’s referral prior to treatment. Contact our office with assistance in determining if you need a referral prior to physical therapy.

  • Can I go to any physical therapy clinic?

In most cases, you have the right to choose any physical therapy clinic. Our practice is an in-network provider for many different insurance plans. You can bring any referral order to any physical therapy clinic.

  • How do I choose a physical therapy clinic?

A number of variables should go in to your decision choosing a clinic: one-on-one time with therapist, insurance benefits, physician referral, location, hours of operation, convenience, wait time, scheduling conflicts, reviews, family or friends referral, etc.

  • What is physiotherapy?

The terms physiotherapy and physical therapy are synonymous.

  • What is manual therapy?

Manual therapy is skilled passive movement of joints and soft tissues. Manual therapists use specific hand placements and forces to restore normal movement to joints and soft tissues. Manual therapy is used in conjunction with other physical therapy techniques such as exercise and modalities.

  • How does SB Physio use technology in treatment, and what does it cost?

Our recovery technologies — such as Class IV laser, shockwave, BFR, ForceDecks testing, and other advanced tools — are sometimes used within your 40-minute physical therapy session if clinically appropriate.

Self-pay patients: technology used within the 40-minute session is included at no additional cost.

Insurance patients: technology may be used within the session when appropriate, but these services are not covered by insurance.

Any technology add-ons performed after your 40-minute session (extended time or extra services) are billed separately. Your therapist will review this with you beforehand so there are no surprises.
