How Many Physical Therapy Sessions Do I Need?

One of the most common questions we hear at SB Physio is: “How many physical therapy visits will I need to get better?” The answer depends on your condition, your goals, and your consistency — but we can share what we typically see and recommend.

The Average at SB Physio: About 12 Visits

Across all patients, our average plan of care is about 12 visits. That’s higher than the national average — but we see this as a good thing. Patients at SB Physio tend to stick with their care plan until they reach 100% recovery, rather than stopping once the pain is only “good enough.”

The result? More complete outcomes, better return to activity, and lower risk of re-injury.

Why We Recommend 2x Per Week (At First)

In most cases, starting with two visits per week for the first four weeks gives patients the best chance at success. Here’s why:

  • Early momentum matters — pain relief, movement retraining, and strengthening build on each other.

  • Consistency beats intensity — spacing visits too far apart makes progress slower.

  • Adjustments can be made later — as you improve, we often taper to once per week or less.

Why We Suggest Booking Ahead

Our schedule fills quickly. That’s why we recommend patients schedule out their first 8 sessions (2x per week for four weeks) as soon as possible. You can always cancel if you’re ahead of schedule, but waiting to book later often means missing your preferred times or delaying your care.

Think of it like reserving your spot at a popular restaurant — better to have the reservation and not need it, than to want it and not be able to get in.

What Factors Affect How Many Sessions You’ll Need?

  • Injury type – a simple ankle sprain may resolve faster than post-surgical ACL rehab.

  • Personal goals – some patients stop once pain improves, others continue to build strength and prevent re-injury.

  • Consistency with home exercise – patients who stay diligent at home often progress faster.

  • Medical complexity – age, prior injuries, or chronic conditions may extend the timeline.

The Bottom Line

On average, expect around 12 visits at SB Physio, starting with two visits per week for four weeks. From there, we reassess and adjust based on your progress and goals.

While the national average for physical therapy is lower, we’re proud that our patients enjoy coming, commit to the process, and stay through a full plan of care. That commitment is what leads to real, lasting results.
