Preventing Falls at Home: Simple Modifications That Make a Big Difference
Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults—but the good news is, many are preventable. At SB Physio, we’re passionate about helping our patients and community stay safe, strong, and independent. Here’s how you can make your home safer for yourself or a loved one.
Why Are Falls So Common?
As we age, changes in balance, muscle strength, vision, and reaction time can all increase the risk of falling. Medical conditions, medications, and even home clutter can add to the risk.
Simple Home Modifications to Prevent Falls
Clear the Pathways
Remove clutter, electrical cords, and loose rugs from walkways. Make sure all hallways and rooms are well-lit, especially at night.Add Grab Bars and Railings
Install grab bars in bathrooms—especially by the toilet and in the shower. Ensure stairways have sturdy handrails on both sides.Non-Slip Surfaces
Place non-slip mats inside and outside the tub or shower. Use non-slip pads under rugs, or remove loose rugs altogether.Rearrange Frequently Used Items
Store everyday items within easy reach to avoid using step stools or climbing.Improve Lighting
Add night lights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways. Use brighter bulbs, and keep flashlights handy in case of power outages.Check Footwear
Encourage wearing well-fitting, non-slip shoes—avoid socks or slippers that slide.
Bonus Tips: Stay Active and Informed
Exercise for Balance and Strength: Regular exercise is one of the best ways to prevent falls. Consider joining a balance class or working with a physical therapist to build confidence and mobility.
Review Medications: Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review all medications for side effects that might increase fall risk.
Vision Checks: Get regular eye exams and keep prescriptions up to date.
